Want to pierce some armor but have the softpoint blues? Get some chromium steel for bling bullets!
From an old edition of Machinery’s handbook. I think it was from the 50s when body armor wasn’t as common as now, so it was probably referring more to tanks and cannons than rifles. Still interesting though, and even with all the advancements in armor over the years, up to a certain point there’s only so much that can be done. If a projectile is the right size, the right hardness, and going fast enough it will punch through/obliterate/disable anything in its way until momentum runs out. Weak spots still exist, of course hitting those in a chaotic situation is easier said than done.
“B-but why does anyone NEED babycopaircraft-killing bullets?” Why not? “Only police and military should have those!” So what? One of the perks of being in the USA is that citizens are supposed to be able to have the same things they do, to discourage them from fucking with our liberties. It’s an increasingly forgotten truth, and don’t give me any of that “What about nukes?” bullshit. Ultimately AP bullets are just another type of projectile. Sure for most situations FMJ and holla points is fine, but what if a gang with borrowed(or gifted) police and military equipment rolls into your hood? It’s good to practice with different types of ammo whether it’s for training or just to see how they perform in comparison. One thing about shooting hard bullets and AP rounds is that they are more likely than soft ones to fragment and ricochet off of solid things, so use caution. Some indoor ranges frown upon it too, no matter how strong the backstop is.
UPDATE: It was the 17th edition from 1964.
