One of the finest exploding barrel scenes in cinematic history

barrels from raw deal

from Raw Deal(1986).  This scene probably took up most of the budget for the movie.

Quote of the day

“Hello…Hello.  I’ve got a message for you, and you’re not going to like it… Pray for death.” – Wyndham

From Prince of Darkness(1987), a spooky movie about a cylinder of ominous ooze in the basement of an old church.  A number of actors from other John Carpenter movies are in it along with Alice cooper.  The urge to look for bugs and worms while encountering homeless will intensify after watching this.

It’s a character turns evil movie/episode/game

“<oldname> is DEAD! I am <newname>!!”-character that turned evil

When one character turns bad and has a showdown with the protagonist there’s a good chance that this will be said.  The most recent example I can think of off the top of my head is Smoke saying it in MKX.  There were a number of good characters turned evil in the storyline but I think he was the only one who had a new name.  Guess he didn’t think Dark Smoke was a cool enough name, even though it’s as good as any shadow/dark(insert name here).  Can you imagine if each turned character had their own alternate names?  The frustration of a hero character warning a former ally against fighting only to have them say “Whoa, whoa, whoa, get with it and use my new name, loser.”  Then once a bad character is defeated the process has to be repeated for each one while trying to keep their names straight.

3storms

Hopefully no rain though, cause there’s enough ice on the roads as it is.

When the paycheck arrives in addition to money from side projects

momoney

Christmas shopping’ll take a big chunk out of it though.  Gif from da homeboy shoppin network on In Living Color.  In money-saving news, I found eight VHS tapes and a couple of DVDs curbside the other night.  Night of the Living Dead(1968), Requiem for a Dream(2000) and Pi(1998), Dragon Fist(1979), Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin(1978), The Chinese Connection(1972), Fists of Fury(1971), Shootfighter 2(1996), and Goodburger(1998).  Night of the Living Dead and Goodburger are the only ones I’ve seen before; hopefully they all work.

Quote/message of the day

Paul Kersey: Hey…what’s the problem?

thug1: wat?

Kersey: With the car, what’s the problem?

thug1: Just get outta my fuckin face.  Who are you?

thug2: We’re stealin the fuckin car, what’s it to you?

Kersey: (shrugs) It’s my car.

thug1: Now you gon die.

thug2: (opens switchblade)

Kersey: (shoots both)

-from Death Wish 3(1985), starring Charles Death Bronson.

itsmycar.gif

Charles Bronson took out copious amounts of criminals in the Death Wish movies.  There are five of them(1974, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1994), and by the last one he uses a remote controlled soccerball bomb.  He was in his 70s and bad guys just couldn’t stop killing his family and friends.

The first two were far more serious, but the third is my favorite for how over the top it is.  The fourth and fifth had their moments but couldn’t hope to surpass the huge 80s gang riot.  Plus Wildey arrives and shows up the S&W Model 29 and Automag.

Death Wish 3 helped sell a lot of Wildey magnums over the years because not many people had heard of them before.  When I first saw the VHS cover long ago it seemed like the gun was a Hollywood shoop of an automatic with a python barrel or something, but it’s for real and real fuckin neato.  Supposedly the Wildey company is back in business again too, so it might be possible to get one new.

Quote of the day

“Those were 500 dollar sunglasses, asshole.” – Johnny Cage

From Mortal Kombat(1995)

The first boss fight sure ended abruptly compared to the one with Scorpion.

As far as video game movies go, MK was better than most.  The CGI doesn’t hold up, and the story changes are a mixed bag, but the choreography was nice and the movie was memorable.  While the 2nd game was excellent, the movie sequel was horribly terrible for the most part.  Some parts of the recent Legacy series are good, but it gets inconsistent and meandering at parts.  The trouble with making a movie about a game with so many characters and different outcomes is that everyone has their favorites.  On the other hand, if comic book movies can be made as good as The Avengers(2012), maybe video game movies will get their due.

New Star Wars’ll be out soon.

I have fond memories of seeing the original trilogy when it was in the silver box of three VHS tapes.  Later the special edition came out and it had the fancy gold box.  Some changes were good, but others were goofy and unnecessary(and when they were released on DVD, there were more).  The most controversial was changing a few frames so that Han Solo would shoot after Greedo in A New Hope.

greedo lies

It’s been discussed to death, so I won’t say much about it, but the scene was fine in it’s original form.  Having Han shoot first makes sense, not just character-wise, but for practicality too.  The reason for changing it was so that Han would shoot “in self defense”, but he already was in the first place!  He was at gunpoint the whole time, so why wait for the other guy to attack?  That concept applies more or less to real life too, although there’s often more after the fact than strolling away and saying “Sorry about the mess.”  If someone threatens you, by all means try and talk them out of it or weigh options of fighting vs. giving in or trying to get away.  But if you do end up having to fight, don’t feel obligated to give them more of a chance to do harm.  Anyway, here’s hoping the new movie or trilogy is good and doesn’t suffer from too much CGitis.  I’ll be happy if it’s better than the prequels and most revisits of franchises.

Wireless bypass successful!

Bought a USB wireless adapter and the internet works now.  To celebrate I saw Mimic(1997), a creature feature about giant mutant bugs that can look humanish in the dark.  Lots of “Don’t go in there.” and “Pick up something to use as a weapon already.”  Parts of it reminded me of The Relic(also 1997), another monster-on-the-loose movie.  They’re alright I guess, but maybe not as good as the other end of the spectrum for bug hunt movies: Aliens(1986) and Starship Troopers(1997 again).  My favorite so far of this category of movie is probably Them!(1954), with the giant ants.  Red Alert had hidden ant missions in one of the addons that were based off of it.

Saw a few good horror movies

Shock waves(1977) is a Spooky low-budget movie about undead Nazis rising up to attack a group stranded on an island.  The death corps are different from the usual movie zombie types.  They hide in the water and trees and silently sneak around but can move fast if they have to.  They don’t eat their victims but kill with their bare hands, preferring to drag them underwater to drown.  Not much is revealed about them other than they were part of an experiment in WWII that was effective yet unpredictable.  But that’s all that has to be revealed; going into detail about why the sky turns yellow or how the ghost ship surfaced or what the dark goggles do would be too much exposition.

Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers(1988) is pretty self-explanatory but it delivers on the premise.  A growing number of murders thought to be from a serial killer are really due to a chainsaw cult.  The leader(Gunnar Hansen, the original Leatherface) sends hookers out to seduce and carve up victims as a sacrifice.  A detective is looking for a runaway who happens to want revenge against the cult.  Chainsaws, humor, boobies, what more could anyone want from a title like this?

Street Trash(1987) is one of the ultimate gross-out movies on par with Troma’s best.  Part of it is about a mysterious case of booze found in a liquor store basement that causes people to violently and colorfully melt right after a mere sip.  It’s also about bums at odds with the world and vice versa.  Everything looks run down and hardly anyone is squeaky clean physically or morally. The main character is kind of an asshole, the cop is hotheaded, some bums are friendlyish but in general everyone is surly(one might even say TOXIC, hyuk) towards another.  The villain is a psycho who carries a knife made from a human femur and used to be a hitman and drug dealer in Nam.  Other than the meltings(and a fat guy explosion), there’s blood, puke, piss, tossing a severed dick around, and a couple love scenes with the unwashed.

3/3
